As a Residential Assistant for a Pre-University Summer School programme, my role encompasses safeguarding and supervision. I adhere strictly to health, safety, and safeguarding policies, ensuring the well-being of students at all times. Living on-site, I oversee daily check-ins and registrations, lead social activities, and support the Residential Welfare Lead in monitoring student behavior. I maintain a visible presence during evenings, maintain regular communication with students during free time, and work on-call shifts overnight to patrol accommodations and address any issues promptly. Shadowing multiple specialities across the hospital, including inpatient/ outpatient, wards, general surgery, cardiology, A&E and opthalmology. I assisted in the reception with some forms of paperwork, aided patients in the wards with their daily walks and helped with language interpretation.
Observed patient appointments with their Doctors and GPs, helped register new patients to the Centre, learnt how to send prescriptions to pharmacies, fill referral forms, do read coding and updating patient information onto central databases. I also assisted as a Bengali/ Hindi interpreter, as the community around the centre was largely South Asian, with most patients requiring interpreter assistance. Working there helps me understand how various sections of the NHS communicate to provide care, and the challenges faced by GPs in areas where a large population is ageing.
